Modern technology has made the surveyor’s tools of today as easy to operate as an iPod. Surveying’s detailed note-keeping and complex mathematics of yesterday have been replaced by the simple push of a button. GPS and CAD technology allow anyone to measure where they are and create 3-D representations without any surveyor training whatsoever.
But there’s a risk in that. Without the right methodologies, carried out by dedicated, trained and licensed surveyors, those measurements are likely to be inaccurate, opening the door to litigation, delays and unnecessary expenses.
